Diodes Incorporated Introduces PAM2011Q 3 W Automotive Class-D Amplifier

Diodes Incorporated has introduced the PAM2011Q automotive Class-D amplifier, delivering up to 3.15 W from 5 V with 94% efficiency and 1.8 mA quiescent current.

Uploaded image Diodes Incorporated has introduced the PAM2011Q, a 3 W mono Class-D audio amplifier for automotive systems where audio performance, power consumption and available board space all need to be considered.

The new filter-free amplifier operates from 2.8 V to 6 V and reaches up to 94% efficiency, with a quiescent current of 1.8 mA. Diodes is targeting applications including emergency call systems, instrument clusters, driver notification systems and dashboard cameras.

Class-D Audio for Compact Automotive Systems

Audio isn't limited to the main entertainment system in a modern vehicle. Smaller electronic modules may also need an amplifier for alerts, notifications, emergency communications and other audible information.

The PAM2011Q is intended for these lower-power applications. From a 5 V supply, it can deliver 2.53 W into a 4 Ω load at 1% THD, rising to 3.15 W at 10% THD. THD+N is specified below 0.03%, with 21 µV A-weighted integrated output noise at 6 dB gain.

Diodes has used a filter-free Class-D architecture, keeping the number of external components needed around the amplifier low. That gives designers a relatively simple audio stage for modules where PCB area is limited.

Efficiency reaches 94%, while quiescent current is 1.8 mA. Together, these characteristics limit the amount of power consumed and dissipated by an amplifier that may spend significant periods powered without operating at full output.

Protection Built into the Amplifier

Automotive audio circuitry also has to deal with faults without adding unnecessary complexity around the amplifier. The PAM2011Q includes overcurrent and overtemperature protection, with automatic recovery after the fault condition has cleared.

A de-pop circuit deals with another problem specific to the audio path. It suppresses the audible pop or click that can otherwise occur as the amplifier is enabled or disabled.

The device comes in a V-DFN2020-8/SWP Type UXC package with sidewall plating, allowing the solder joints to be checked during SMT inspection. Diodes describes the PAM2011Q as automotive compliant, meaning it is AEC qualified, manufactured at IATF 16949:2016-certified facilities and supported by PPAP documentation.

The PAM2011QSH8W-7 is available in 3,000-piece 7-inch tape-and-reel packaging. Target applications include eCall and T-box systems, instrument clusters, driver notification systems and dashboard cameras.

Technology Overview

Class-D audio amplifiers use a switching output stage rather than operating their output transistors continuously in the linear region. Their high conversion efficiency makes the architecture useful in compact electronics where power consumption and heat generation need to be limited. A filter-free Class-D amplifier can drive suitable speakers without the external LC output filter traditionally associated with switching amplifiers, reducing the number of components required around the device.
