Diodes AL3069Q Boost Controller Enhances Automotive LED Backlighting

Diodes launches the AL3069Q boost controller with four 80V current sinks, wide input range and full diagnostics for advanced automotive LED backlighting.

Uploaded image Diodes Incorporated has announced the AL3069Q, a boost controller designed for automotive-grade LED backlighting systems that need high power, tight current matching and robust diagnostic support. As vehicle displays grow in size and resolution, backlight drivers face increasing demands around brightness uniformity, thermal behaviour and system reliability.

The AL3069Q is designed for the kinds of automotive displays that keep growing in size and complexity. Infotainment panels, digital clusters and heads-up displays all depend on stable, predictable backlighting, so anything driving those LEDs has to manage brightness, uniformity and fault reporting without adding noise to the rest of the system.

Flexible Input Range and Adaptive Voltage Control

A wide 4.5V to 60V input range means the controller can sit comfortably on most automotive power rails, from a standard 12V line through to 24V and 48V systems used in newer platforms. That breadth gives engineers freedom when designing for different vehicle classes, from passenger EVs to heavier commercial equipment. Adaptive boost voltage control helps the device maintain the right headroom as LED loads change, allowing the system to stay efficient across a variety of operating points. The switching frequency can be configured between 100kHz and 1MHz, giving engineers the option to prioritise either higher efficiency or a more compact PCB layout depending on the requirements of the display module.

Four 80V Current Sinks With High Matching Accuracy

At the core of the device are four precision 80V current sink channels, each capable of delivering 250mA continuous current and up to 400mA pulse current. Current matching between channels and across devices is rated at ±0.5 percent typical, which becomes important as display sizes increase and even small brightness variations can stand out. This capability supports LED strings for panels up to around 32 inches diagonal and allows the AL3069Q to scale with next-generation cockpit designs. The controller also supports PWM-to-analog dimming with a minimum duty cycle of 1/5000 at 100Hz, reducing colour shift and providing better low-level brightness control.

Built-In Protection and Extensive Fault Diagnostics

Diodes has included a wide set of safety and diagnostic functions suited to harsh automotive environments. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, undervoltage lockout, programmable overvoltage protection, overtemperature protection and soft-start. The device can detect LED-open and LED-short conditions, diode faults, inductor short circuits and VOUT short scenarios. A dedicated FAULTB pin provides real-time reporting of abnormal states, helping designers meet functional safety goals and improving serviceability.

Packaging and Availability

The AL3069Q is offered in compact 16-pin TSSOP-16EP and U-QFN4040-16/SWP packages, providing integration in space-constrained display modules. Pricing starts at $0.54 for 1,000-piece quantities. A non-automotive version, the AL3069, is also available for industrial and commercial systems. For broader context, The Component Club has recently covered several automotive LED and display drivers, making the AL3069Q a relevant addition to developments in vehicle cockpit electronics.
