Infineon Integrates Power, Resolver and Safety Functions in TLE9744QK PMIC

Infineon launches the TLE9744QK PMIC for EV traction inverters, integrating power supplies, resolver excitation and independent ASIL-D safety logic.

Uploaded image Infineon has introduced the OPTIREG TLE9744QK power management IC for high-voltage traction inverter ECUs in electric and hybrid vehicles, integrating power-supply functions, resolver excitation and independent safety logic into a single device.

The TLE9744QK is designed to supply the multiple power rails required by microcontrollers, communication modules and sensors within the traction inverter ECU. It also generates the resolver excitation signal internally and includes dedicated safety hardware for monitoring the inverter and its control electronics.

Infineon says replacing the corresponding discrete components with the integrated PMIC can reduce the PCB footprint associated with those devices by up to 70%.

Power Management and Resolver Excitation

Traction inverter ECUs require several power supplies for the control and monitoring electronics surrounding the inverter. The TLE9744QK consolidates these power-supply functions while supporting a range of microcontrollers and gate drivers.

The PMIC also provides a supply for off-board sensors, giving designers more flexibility in how sensing is distributed around the traction inverter system. Resolver excitation is integrated directly into the TLE9744QK. The device can generate the excitation signal used by the resolver for motor rotor position sensing, removing the need for separate resolver driver and monitoring circuitry.

Infineon has designed the PMIC for interoperability with different MCU and gate-driver platforms, allowing the device to be incorporated into traction inverter designs without tying the power architecture to a specific controller.

Independent Safety Logic for ASIL-D Systems

Alongside the power and resolver functions, the TLE9744QK includes Integrated Safety Logic (ISL) that operates as an independent hardware safety path.

The ISL continuously supervises phase currents, DC-link voltage and the health of the main MCU and gate drivers. If the main MCU malfunctions, the safety logic can independently determine and enforce a safe state rather than relying on the controller responsible for normal inverter operation.

Infineon has also included a redundant supply input for the safety logic. If the main low-voltage supply fails, the secondary supply can keep the ISL operational so that the safety path remains available during the fault.

The independent architecture is intended to support functional safety requirements in traction inverter systems, with the TLE9744QK fulfilling ASIL-D compliance as developed according to ISO 26262.

The OPTIREG TLE9744QK is available now. Infineon is also providing samples, evaluation boards, reference designs, documentation, software and development tools.
