Renesas Launches 1.155 mm GreenPAK IC with In-System Reconfiguration

Renesas launches the SLG46801 configurable mixed-signal GreenPAK IC in a 1.155 × 1.155 mm WLCSP, with multi-time programming, I²C configuration and 1.71 V to 5.5 V operation.

Uploaded image Renesas has introduced the SLG46801, a configurable mixed-signal GreenPAK IC that combines analog, timing and logic functions in a 1.155 × 1.155 mm WLCSP package.

The new device is designed to handle sensing, control, timing, system housekeeping and glue-logic functions that might otherwise require separate components or MCU resources. Alongside the 9-ball WLCSP, Renesas offers a 12-lead STQFN version measuring 1.6 × 1.6 × 0.55 mm for designs that need additional I/O.

What makes the SLG46801 more than simply a smaller GreenPAK is its multi-time programmable (MTP) non-volatile memory. The device can be configured through I²C after it has been installed in the system, allowing its programmed functions to be changed without replacing the IC.

Configurable Logic in a 1.155 mm Package

Despite the small footprint, the SLG46801 contains two high-speed analog comparators, configurable lookup tables, counters and delays, 10 kHz and 25 MHz oscillators, voltage-tolerant GPIOs and an I²C-compatible serial interface.

These resources can be configured to implement relatively small hardware functions around a system's main processor. Renesas is targeting applications including wearables, handheld electronics, smart-home products, IoT sensor nodes, industrial control, networking and computing hardware.

The WLCSP minimizes board area for particularly space-constrained designs such as smart rings, smartwatches and VR glasses. The larger STQFN package trades some of that footprint advantage for additional GPIO availability and an alternative package format.

Reconfiguration After the Device Is Installed

The SLG46801's MTP non-volatile memory can be programmed in-system through the I²C interface. Renesas says this allows configurations to be updated after the GreenPAK has already been integrated into the end product, including changes made during debugging or later product revisions.

GPIO pins can also be dynamically repurposed for the I²C interface, which is useful when pin availability is limited. Optional CRC-8 and read-back protection are available for controlling and checking programmed configurations. Both operation and programming are supported across the full 1.71 V to 5.5 V supply range. Renesas describes this as the widest operating and configurable voltage range among its MTP GreenPAK devices.

Configuration, simulation and emulation are handled through the Renesas Go Configure Software Hub, a GUI-based development environment for defining the mixed-signal and logic functions implemented by the device.

The STQFN version of the SLG46801 is sampling now. Mass production of the WLCSP version is planned for November 2026.

Technology Overview

The Renesas SLG46801 is a multi-time programmable GreenPAK configurable mixed-signal IC available in a 1.155 × 1.155 mm 9-ball WLCSP or 1.6 × 1.6 × 0.55 mm 12-lead STQFN package. It integrates analog comparators, configurable logic, timing resources, oscillators, GPIO and I²C, with in-system programming across a 1.71 V to 5.5 V supply range.

FAQs

What functions can the SLG46801 implement?

The device integrates two analog comparators, configurable lookup tables, counters and delays, 10 kHz and 25 MHz oscillators, voltage-tolerant GPIOs and an I²C-compatible interface for implementing sensing, control, timing and glue-logic functions.

Can the SLG46801 be reconfigured after installation?

Yes. Its multi-time programmable non-volatile memory can be configured in-system through I²C, allowing the programmed hardware functions to be changed after the IC has been integrated into a design.

What packages are available for the SLG46801?

Renesas offers a 9-ball 1.155 × 1.155 mm WLCSP for minimum board area and a 12-lead 1.6 × 1.6 × 0.55 mm STQFN option with additional I/O availability.
