Infineon Raises the Bar in Coreless Current Sensing with New XENSIV Devices

Infineon’s new TLE4971 and TLI4971 sensors achieve 0.7 percent total error, providing high-precision, coreless current measurement for automotive and industrial power systems.

Uploaded image Accurate current measurement is one of the foundations of efficient power conversion, and Infineon Technologies has taken a notable step forward in this area. The company’s latest additions to its XENSIV family, the TLE4971 and TLI4971, are magnetic coreless current sensors that combine high precision with a compact design suited to both automotive and industrial systems.

Infineon claims a total error of just 0.7 percent over temperature and lifetime, which places these sensors among the most accurate coreless devices on the market. Unlike traditional Hall-based designs that rely on magnetic cores, the new parts use a differential sensing method that eliminates hysteresis and saturation, reducing drift and improving repeatability over time.

Engineering for Reliability and Flexibility

The devices are built into a 300 mil package already familiar from Infineon’s EiceDRIVER products. It offers 8 millimetres of creepage and clearance, along with reinforced or basic isolation for use in high-voltage circuits. Inside, a low-resistance current rail of around 550 micro-ohms minimises losses, helping maintain thermal efficiency even under heavy load.

Six factory-programmed current ranges are available, from 16 amps up to 50 amps, giving engineers flexibility when balancing sensitivity and measurement headroom. The sensors can monitor both AC and DC currents through an analog interface, while two dedicated overcurrent detection channels provide a safeguard against sudden faults.

Configuration options are stored in the on-chip EEPROM, allowing developers to fine-tune the protection thresholds and filtering characteristics. This helps the same sensor serve multiple roles, from energy storage to power conversion or motor control.

Applications Across Energy and Mobility

The TLE4971 targets automotive systems such as on-board chargers and high-voltage auxiliary drives. The TLI4971 variant focuses on industrial and renewable energy use, including photovoltaic inverters, battery storage, and DC fast chargers. With fast overcurrent detection, the sensors are also well suited to designs that use wide-bandgap semiconductors such as GaN or SiC, where switching speeds and fault response times are critical.

Infineon’s approach reflects a wider industry trend toward compact, highly accurate current measurement that removes the need for magnetic shielding or large external components. By improving accuracy and reducing error across temperature and lifetime, these new sensors bring added confidence to system designers working at the front line of electrification.

Availability

The XENSIV TLE4971 and TLI4971 sensors are available now. Infineon also offers a three-phase 50 amp evaluation board (TLE4971-EVAL-50A) with full documentation for engineers beginning development.
